Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for plant operational maintenance
   • Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation required to perform plant operation maintenance
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures according to workplace procedures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Select appropriate plant, tools and equipment for the job, inspect them for serviceability and rectify or report any faults prior to commencement of work activities
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for emergency situations
2. Conduct planned routine maintenance
   • Identify and interpret the maintenance schedule, and coordinate the resource requirements with relevant personnel according to workplace procedures
   • Complete planned routine maintenance according to workplace procedures
   • Record any follow-up action required according to workplace procedures
3. Conduct breakdown maintenance
   • Determine the extent of breakdown maintenance required with relevant personnel
   • Complete breakdown maintenance according to workplace procedures
   • Record details of maintenance action completed or required according to workplace procedures
4. Conduct temporary repairs
   • Identify the location of the problem
   • Assess the requirement for temporary repairs with relevant personnel and acquire the required resources
   • Complete the repair according to workplace procedures
   • Record details of temporary repairs completed or required according to workplace procedures
5. Finalise the maintenance activity
   • Clear work area and dispose of materials according to workplace procedures
   • Clean and maintain the plant and equipment, inspect for ensure serviceability and rectify or report any faults or issues to relevant personnel
   • Process written maintenance records according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

perform plant operational maintenance on at least two occasions, including:

interpreting the maintenance schedule and coordinating resources

completing planned routine maintenance

evaluating the extent of work required to fix the breakdown

completing breakdown maintenance

completing temporary repairs

recording details of maintenance action completed and/or follow-up action required

completing housekeeping activities.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures and confirm that the work activity is compliant

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for performing plant operational maintenance

work effectively with others to perform plant operational maintenance in a way that meets all required outcomes

communicate clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions and to determine coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key policies, procedures and documentation required to perform plant operational maintenance, including:

site and equipment safety requirements

equipment and plant operational procedures

site equipment and plant maintenance procedures

site environmental requirements and constraints related to operational maintenance activities

principles and techniques for identifying equipment and plant types, characteristics, capabilities and limitations

principles and techniques for identifying relevant hazards and emergencies

techniques for coordinating and communicating job activities with others.
